Letter to Minister Abbott from CUPE BC president Barry O’Neill

I am writing on Day 3 of the strike by 3,500 CUPE 873 ambulance paramedics to demand your government move to resolve this critical dispute.

The union has proposed the appointment of an independent third party to assist in negotiating a settlement , including binding arbitration if needed.

As you are no doubt aware, the BC Ministry of Labour report issued by your own government on March 29 on collective bargaining with ambulance paramedics states that “Regrettably…there is virtually no chance for a voluntary settlement between the parties prior to April 14, 2009. Both parties agree with this assessment.”

Suggestions of appointing a fact finder, facilitator or delaying the process for 90 days would do nothing to settle this.

In the interest of maintaining public confidence in this critical emergency service, it is imperative the parties agree to appoint a mediator/arbitrator now to resolve this dispute.
