Statement on Honourable John Horgan’s future as Premier of British Columbia

June 30, 2022

Dear Members,

Following Premier John Horgan’s statement on his decision not to run for re-election in his riding of Juan de Fuca and that he will be stepping down as the leader of the NDP, the Ambulance Paramedics and Emergency Dispatchers of BC want to acknowledge and thank Premier Horgan for all that he has done for the citizens of BC.

Over the past few decades, and especially the last few years, we have constantly been impressed and supportive of our Premier and his leadership during some significantly trying times. No Premier has presided over such extraordinary times, including multiple healthcare and environmental events.  We have seen the government, under Premier Horgan’s leadership, fight many battles, including a global pandemic, an ongoing opioid drug crisis, and significant healthcare and paramedic staffing challenges. The ongoing support and commitments to paramedic and dispatch services under his leadership have been unprecedented, and for that, we thank him on behalf of our patients, members, their families, and the citizens of British Columbia that we all serve.

Public service is not a job that many people have the strength for. It can be challenging, thankless, frustrating, and often puts the work of the public ahead of everything else. We have watched Premier Horgan fight many battles in his career, and most recently, we saw him battle cancer for the second time. There are few Premiers that have had the strength and determination that John has, and for that, we thank him and wish him all the best in whatever future endeavours he embarks on.

Sincerely,

Troy Clifford

President
