Day of Mourning for Queen Elizabeth II, September 19, 2022
Dear Members:
Re: Day of Mourning for Queen Elizabeth II, September 19, 2022
On September 13, 2022, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that Monday, September 19, 2022, will be a holiday for federal government employees to mourn Queen Elizabeth II on the day of her state funeral, and that his government is working to co-ordinate with the Provinces and Territories. We understand that federally regulated employers are not being required to provide this as a paid day off for their employees.
In recognition of the Prime Minister’s announcement, the Government of BC has advised provincial public sector employers to honour September 19th as a holiday.
On a without prejudice basis, BCEHS Employers will observe September 19, 2022, as a paid holiday for employees who are normally entitled to new provincial and federal holidays. Recognizing the short notice and the impact of closures and service reductions on patient care, BCEHS member employers will reduce services where possible. Where it is not possible to do so, employees will be compensated in the same manner as they would for any other paid holiday.
